The Honourable Dr. Gwen Healey Akearok was elected in the general election held on October 27, 2025, to represent the constituency of Iqaluit-Manirajak in the 7th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.
Dr. Healey Akearok was elected to serve on the Executive Council during the November 18, 2025, proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. She was formally sworn into office on November 20, 2025.
Prior to her election, Dr. Healey Akearok served as the Executive and Scientific Director of the Qaujigiartiit Health Research Centre, a position she held for almost two decades. Dr. Healey Akearok has been an Associate Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine since 2015.
Dr. Healey Akearok holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Physics from Queen’s University; a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Community Health and Epidemiology from the University of Calgary and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Public Health from the University of Toronto. Dr. Healey Akearok was a Fulbright Arctic Scholar from 2018-2019 and the Fulbright Canada Research Chair in Arctic Studies from 2022-2023.
Dr. Healey Akearok has served as a Member and Chairperson of the Iqaluit District Education Authority and as a Member of the Executive Council of the Coalition of Nunavut District Education Authorities. She was a Founding Director of the Annauma Community Foundation of Iqaluit and has held positions with the Canadian Northern Studies Trust, the Nunavut Health Foundation and the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health.
Gwen and Jason Apak Akearok are the proud parents of Jaia and Amaija.
Dr. Healey Akearok’s personal interests include sewing, cross-country skiing, boating, camping and other on-the-land activities.
