Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Mourns the Passing of Former MLA Donald Havioyak

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 24, 2025) - Speaker David Joanasie today issued the following statement:

“I was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Donald Havioyak, who represented the constituency of Kugluktuk during the 1^st Legislative Assembly. Mr. Havioyak served as a Minister during the first government and was a well-respected advocate for the preservation and promotion of Inuinnaqtun. Mr. Havioyak also served as President of the Kitikmeot Inuit Association and was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal. On behalf of all Members of the Legislative Assembly, we extend our condolences to his family.”

The community flag of Kugluktuk will be half-masted at the Legislative Assembly Precinct in honour of his passing.
