Legislative Assembly Recommends Appointment of New Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 9, 2013) - The Legislative Assembly today approved a motion recommending that the Honourable J.E. (Ted) Richard be appointed Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House.

The territorial Integrity Act provides that the Integrity Commissioner holds office for a five-year term. The appointment of the present Integrity Commissioner expires on September 9, 2013. Mr. Richard’s appointment is effective September 10, 2013.

Nunavut and Northwest Territories Speakers Welcome CRTC Decision Concerning Mandatory Carriage of Legislative Proceedings

IQALUIT, Nunavut and YELLOWKNIFE, Northwest Territories (August 8, 2013) – Speakers Hunter Tootoo and Jackie Jacobson today welcomed the decision of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to require mandatory carriage of the legislatures’ televised proceedings on the digital basic service of the direct-to-home satellite broadcasting distribution undertakings serving Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

Standing Committee to hold hearings on the Annual Reports of the Languages Commissioner and Information and Privacy Commissioner

IQALUIT, Nunavut (April 8, 2013) - The Standing Committee on Oversight of Government Operations and Public Accounts will hold hearings from April 16-18, 2013, on the most recent annual reports to the Legislative Assembly of the Languages Commissioner of Nunavut and the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Nunavut. All Regular Members of the Legislative Assembly serve on the Standing Committee.

The Languages Commissioner of Nunavut, Ms. Sandra Inutiq, has been invited to appear before the Standing Committee at 1:30pm on Tuesday, April 16, 2013.

Speaker of the Legislative Assembly announces designation of new Languages Commissioner of Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (December 10, 2012) - Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Hunter Tootoo today announced that the Management and Services Board will be recommending to all Members of the Legislative Assembly that a formal motion be moved at the next sitting of the House to appoint Ms. Sandra Inutiq as Languages Commissioner of Nunavut. The 3rd Session of the 3rd Legislative Assembly reconvenes on February 26, 2013. Ms. Inutiq has been appointed Acting Languages Commissioner, effective January 14, 2013.

Youth Parliament to be Televised Live Across Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 20, 2012) - The Honourable Hunter Tootoo, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, today announced that the 4th Nunavut Youth Parliament will be televised live across the territory on local co-op channels. The proceedings of the Youth Parliament will be held in the Chamber of the Legislative Assembly on Thursday, November 22, 2012, starting at 1:30pm (EST).
