Joanna Quassa was elected in the general election held on October 25, 2021, to represent the constituency of Aggu in the 6th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. 

Ms. Quassa was elected to serve on the Executive Council during the November 17, 2021, proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. She was formally sworn into office on November 19, 2021. She serves as Minister of Environment, Minister responsible for Energy and Minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College.

Ms. Quassa began her professional career as a teacher. She has also held senior positions with the Department of Culture and Heritage and the Municipality of Igloolik. 

Ms. Quassa is a graduate of Nunavut Arctic College’s Nunavut Teachers Education Program (NTEP). 

Ms. Quassa has served as the Mayor of Igloolik, a member of the community’s Alcohol Education Committee and a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s National Indigenous Advisory Committee. 

Her volunteer activities include vestry work at the Anglican Church and community recreation. Joanna and Simon Quassa are the proud parents of Davidina and Wendel. 

Ms. Quassa is an avid crafter whose personal interests also include camping and reading.
