Keith Peterson was elected to the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the February 2004 general election. He was acclaimed to the 3rd Legislative Assembly in the October 2008 general election. Mr. Peterson’s constituency of Cambridge Bay also includes the unincorporated communities of Bathurst Inlet and Umingmaktok.
A life-long Northerner, Mr. Peterson has held a number of positions in the field of economic and social development, including Manager of the Kitikmeot Economic Development Commission, Manager of the Nunavut Economic Development Organization, Secretary-Treasurer of the Kitikmeot Corporation and Inuit Impact Benefit Agreement Negotiator for the Kitikmeot Inuit Association.
Prior to being elected to territorial office, Mr. Peterson served as the Mayor of Cambridge Bay, Chairman of the Kitikmeot Law Centre and President of the Nunavut Association of Municipalities.
During the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Mr. Peterson served as the Co-Chair of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Accountability and the Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Housing and Economic Development. He also served as a member of the Management and Services Board.
Mr. Peterson was appointed Minister of Finance and Minister of Health and Social Services on November 19, 2008. He was also the Minister responsible for the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission and the Utility Rates Review Council and on September 15, 2010 Mr. Peterson was re-appointed as Minister of Finance, Minister of Justice and Minister responsible for Public Agencies Council, Labour Standards Board and Liquor Licensing Board.
Keith and his wife Sandra are the parents of two sons. They live in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut.
