The Honourable George Qulaut was elected in the general election held on October 28, 2013, to represent the constituency of Amittuq in the 4th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. The constituency includes the community of Hall Beach and a portion of the community of Igloolik.

Mr. Qulaut was acclaimed as Speaker during the November 15, 2013, proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. Mr. Qulaut formally took the Chair on November 19, 2013, at the commencement of the first sitting of the 4th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.

Mr. Qulaut has held a number of senior positions during his career, including Assistant Deputy Minister of the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth. Mr. Qulaut has also served as a member of the Nunavut Implementation Commission and as the Operations Manager of the world-renowned Igloolik Research Centre.

Mr. Qulaut has been a participant and guest speaker at numerous professional and academic conferences and events. Committed to life-long learning, Mr. Qulaut has studied language and culture under the guidance of Igloolik Elders, taken courses in computers and photography at Carleton University and holds a diploma from the Institute of Advanced Management at the Banff Centre.

Mr. Qulaut has served on numerous boards and agencies, including the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, the Board of Directors of the Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and the Board of Directors of the Qikiqtani Inuit Association. Mr. Qulaut’s previous elected offices include positions on the Municipal Council of Igloolik and the community’s Hunters and Trappers Organization.

Mr. Qulaut is an active volunteer with his local church and works closely with community Elders to compile and preserve oral history and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit.

George and his wife, Patricia, have four children and five grandchildren. Mr. Qulaut’s personal interests include hunting, photography and art.
