Hunter
Tootoo
Hunter Tootoo was born on August 18, 1963 in Rankin Inlet. He spent
his childhood and youth living across both Northern and Southern
Canada. Mr. Tootoo was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut
to represent the people of Iqaluit Centre, in general elections
of 1999 and 2004.
In 1993, Mr. Tootoo started work as the recreation coordinator
for the town of Arviat. He moved to Rankin Inlet in 1995, where
he worked as an Administration Officer for the Department of Economic
Development and Tourism, and as a Corporate Control Officer with
the Department of Finance. In 1997 he moved to Iqaluit to fill the
position of Assistant Director with the NWT Housing Corporation.
Mr.Tootoo and his wife also established the Iqaluit branch of Arctic
Insurance Brokers Ltd.
Mr. Tootoo's previous experiences in public life include serving
as Chair of the Padli and Kisarvik Co-ops in Arviat and Rankin Inlet;
as a member of the NWT Co-op Business Development Board; a member
of the Board of Directors of Sport North and Arctic Co-operatives
Limited and as a member of Rankin Inlet's Hamlet Council.
As a Member of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Tootoo currently serves
as Chair of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and
Accountability and as a member of the Standing Committee on Health
and Education, the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and Privileges
the Striking Committee and the Management and Services Board.
