About the Assembly

Tagak Curley was born in a hunting camp at Coral Harbour, Nunavut. 

Mr. Curley was a founding member and first President of the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada.

He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1979 to 1987. During his tenure, he held a variety of Ministerial portfolios, including Minister of Economic Development.

Mr. Curley has held a number of positions in the private sector, including the position of President of the Nunavut Construction Corporation.

In the February 2004 Nunavut general election, Mr. Curley was acclaimed to represent the constituency of Rankin Inlet North in the 2nd Legislative Assembly. He was also acclaimed in the October 2008 general election.

During the 2nd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, Mr. Curley served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Housing and Economic Development. He also served as a member of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Accountability, the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and Privileges and the Management and Services Board.

In 1998, Mr. Curley was awarded the Aboriginal Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the business world. On October 24, 2003, Mr. Curley was invested into the Order of Canada.
