About the Assembly

James Arvaluk was re-elected to the 3rd Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the October 2008 general election to represent the constituency of Tununiq. He was first elected in the October 2006 bi-election.

Mr. Arvaluk was first elected to government as a Member of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly from Aivilik from 1991 to 1995. During part of this time he held the Cabinet portfolio of Education.

Mr. Arvaluk has also held leadership roles in many organizations, including President of the Hunters’ and Trapper’ Association, Hamlet Council of Coral Harbour, and President of the Inuit Tapiriit of Canada (ITC).

Mr. Arvaluk’s other experience includes being an adult educator, programmer for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for Inuktitut programming, Special Assistant to the Baffin Regional Director, working within the Land Claims Division of ITC, economic development officer, coordinator of special projects for the Hamlet of Coral Harbour and Government Liaison Officer of Coral Harbour.

Mr. Arvaluk was born on Fury and Hecla Straits, near Igloolik. He has twin boys Aapak and Nuqallaq.
