The Honourable Hunter Tootoo MLA for Iqaluit Centre |

![]() Hunter Tootoo has represented the constituency of Iqaluit Centre since 1999. He was elected to the 1st Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the February 1999 general election. He was subsequently re-elected in the general elections of February 2004 and October 2008. Mr. Tootoo was born in Rankin Inlet and has lived in a number of different communities across Canada. He has been held a number of positions in the public and private sectors, including recreation coordinator for the Municipality of Arviat, Administration Officer for the Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Corporate Control Officer for the Department of Finance and Assistant Director of the Northwest Territories Housing Corporation. Mr. Tootoo has also operated an insurance business. Prior to being elected to territorial office, Mr. Tootoo held a variety of positions, including Chair of the Padli and Kisarvik Co-ops in Arviat and Rankin Inlet, member of the Northwest Territories Co-op Business Development Board, member of the Board of Directors of Sport North, member of the Board of Directors of Arctic Co-operatives Limited and as a member of the Municipal Council of Rankin Inlet. During the 2nd Legislative Assembly, Mr. Tootoo served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Accountability. He also served on the Standing Committee on Health and Education, the Standing Committee on Rules, Procedures and Privileges, the Striking Committee and the Management and Services Board. Mr. Tootoo was appointed Minister of Education and Minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation on November 19, 2008. He is also the Minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College and Minister responsible for Homelessness. |
